Tiros I - the First Weather Satellite

April 1, 1960 - Fifty years ago today - The United States weather satellite, Tiros I, is placed into orbit. The Television Infrared Observation Satellite I is launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It is the world's first weather observation satellite, providing proof that weather forecasting can be accurately performed in space. Its launching opens a new phase of mankind's activity in outer space.
